The town of Crystal is of a mile beyond the mill. It was founded in 1880 by prospectors. Seven working silver mines kept Crystal going, and by 1886, about four hundred people lived in the town that had two newspapers, two hotels, saloons, billiard parlor, barber shop, and the menonly Crystal
The Crystal Mill is located 6 miles east of Marble, just before the ghost town of Crystal. It is reachable only in the summer and fall months by a rough, onelane, 4wheeldrive road. If you are not interested in driving, or your vehicle does not have generous ground clearance, the trip to Crystal and The Mill can be reached by foot, mountain bike, or guided jeep tour.

As the mines played out, so did the town although the are has never really been deserted. The area is still a sportsmans paradise today and there are several cabins in the area. The road to Crystal goes through Marble and eventually winds through Schofield pass end Gothic on its way to Crested Butte The road is suitable for walking and that is about it.
